Ronald Koeman Is On Borrowed Time As Barcelona Tumble Against Benfica

Ronald Koeman’s F.C. Barcelona suffered a second 3-0 defeat in a row in the UEFA Champions League, leaving them at the bottom of Group E.

Barcelona’s league form hasn’t been too bad, having been unbeaten in their last six games. In Europe, however, it’s a different story. Barcelona failed to register a single shot on target against Bayern Munich on matchday 1, and most must have thought things could only get better against Benfica.

That wasn’t the case as Barcelona looked clueless all over the pitch and once again failed to register a shot on target. This is Barcelona’s worst start to a UEFA Champions League campaign.

While we conceded early, we were good until it became 2-0. We had a number of chances to score and didn’t take them. That’s how you change games.”, said Koeman following the defeat.

Darwin Nunez started off the abysmal night of football for Barcelona, scoring after just three minutes on the clock. The Blaugrana looked to gain some tempo in the game but to no avail as Rafa Silva doubled the hosts’ advantage after the 69th minute, scoring from a rebound off of Joao Mario’s shot. Sergino Dest then handled the ball inside the box, and Darwin Nunez got his second to end the contest via the penalty spot.

Things only got worse for the Blaugrana as youngster Eric Garcia got sent off in the 87th minute for his second yellow of the night.

Koeman, who is under massive pressure following the loss, insists that the players have his back despite the loss, but is unsure about what the club board decides about his future.

I can only give you my opinion of my work at the club — I feel backed by my players and their attitude. The rest, the club, I’m not sure … I can’t say any more, because I don’t know what the club thinks in that sense. It’s not in my hands.

Amid constant speculation and criticism, Ronald Koeman needs to act- and fast, if he is to save his job at the club. The Barcelona manager has failed to impress fans with the team’s lackluster performances since the start of the season.
As of now, Barcelona sits in sixth place at the La Liga table, with just three wins out of six games.
