Every year hundreds of people across Nepal enter the US Department of State drawing to win an immigrant visa to legally immigrate to the United States with permanent resident status.
However, after the covid-19 pandemic, the diversity visa lottery work has been going slow. Today at around 9 in the evening the Department of State is going to publish the result of 2022 however, there are rising concerns among the previous winners that if they would be able to travel to the US before their entry time ends which is September this year.
Due to the prohibitory order placed in Kathmandu and with the rising covid-19 cases across the country, it is very unlikely that the government will end the restriction order anytime soon.
The embassy in their official site has clearly stated that the US Embassy will remain closed for routine US citizen services and for all visa services for the duration of the lockdown.
“All U.S. citizen services appointments will be rescheduled. In the event of an immediate need for service or an emergency, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request an emergency appointment or call 01 423 4000. The Embassy will reopen U.S. citizen services appointments after the lockdown is lifted.” states in the site
In Diversity Visa Lottery applicants who are selected in the program are drawn from random selection by computer.
The 55,000 visas are available for immigrants with historically low rates of immigration to the US. From Nepal nearly 5500 people will be selected in the first phase.
To check if an application was selected in the visa lottery, all DV-2022 program participants must search for their names in the Entrant Status Check search tool available on the Bureau’s website.
